If you've just received a new HEINE otoscope, this short guide walks you through every step from unboxing to your first patient examination. AKAD Medical has been the authorized HEINE distributor for Turkey since 1984, and every device comes with our technical support.
1. Unbox and Verify Components
Confirm the following items are present:
- Otoscope head unit
- BETA® or mini 3000® battery handle
- Reusable speculum set (2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm)
- Disposable speculum samples
- Spare bulb (if applicable) or LED module
- User manual and declaration of conformity
2. Insert the Battery
Unscrew the handle counter-clockwise. Insert a standard C alkaline battery or the HEINE rechargeable battery with the + terminal facing up. Reassemble, then attach the head to confirm the device powers on.
3. Speculum Selection
Adult patients typically suit a 4 mm speculum. For pediatric exams, use 2.5 mm or 3 mm. Insert gently into the ear canal and pull the pinna gently up-and-back to straighten the canal.
4. Adjust Light Intensity
BETA 200 and mini 3000 models include a rheostat in the handle so you can fine-tune brightness for the room. Start mid-range and increase only as needed — overly bright light in a dark room is fatiguing.
5. Cleaning and Maintenance
Wash reusable speculums after every patient with a mild detergent and autoclave at 134 °C (HEINE All-Spec®). For the head unit and handle, use only alcohol-based surface disinfectant — do not immerse in water.
